Penelope "Penny" Merlene Obituary

Penelope “Penny” Anne Merlene, 89, of Conneaut, passed away Monday evening, March 18, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born December 1, 1934, the daughter of John and Elenor (Burnett) Kerner.

Penny graduated from high school and attended Villa Maria in Youngstown. She was a stay-at-home mother raising her children until they were grown and then went on to work at the Red Barn, General Electric, was the site manager for Community Action, and volunteered at UH in the gift shop.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and enjoyed volunteering at Cabrini Church. Penny rode her bike or walked everywhere she went, and loved going to the beach. She loved Disney World, especially Mickey & Minnie. After her husband passed away, she took all of her children, grandchildren, and all of their spouses to Disney World. A vacation that will forever be cherished by her family. Being together with her family was always a blessing to her.

Survivors include her children Doug Merlene of Conneaut, Rusty Merlene of SC, Jeffrey (Cyndy) Merlene of Conneaut, John (Peggy) Merlene of Venice, FL, Jimmy (Beverly) Merlene, of Conneaut, and Linda (Sonny) Heinonen of Conneaut; her sister Hannah Kerner of Oakland, CA, brothers John Kerner of Williamsburg, VA, and Greg Kerner of Milwaukee, WI; grandchildren Mandy (Sean) O’Grady of Fishers, IN, Ryan (Amanda) Merlene of Stow, OH, Lindsay (Jarrod) Sharp of Conneaut, Nicholas Merlene of Ashtabula, Brian (Tracy) Heinonen of Kewaskum, WI, Brett (Julie) Heinonen of Tucson, AZ, Sarah (Case) Kofka of Chadler, AZ, Jillian (Josh) Furmage of Tucson, AZ, Erik Heinonen of Yuma, AZ, Matt (Rose) Merlene of VA, Megan (Gwena) Merlene of Ontario, Canada, Anthony (Gina) Merlene of Medina, OH, Meg (Nate) Williams of Wesley Chapel, FL, Maddie (Cole Washko) Merlene of Lakewood Ranch, FL, Hanna Merlene, Joey Merlene, Chandler Lower all of Conneaut; great-grandchildren Cam, Cohen, Ben, Blake, Jordan, Harper, Oaklyn, Cale, Chase, Landon, Colton, Penelope, Julianna, Josephine, Brody and Vinny; and several nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Russell Merlene; sister-in-law Barbara Kerner; brother-in law and sister-in-law Lou and Connie Merlene; and mother-in-law and father-in-law Gertrude and Marion Merlene.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 744 Mill St., Conneaut. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4:00-7:00PM, Friday, March 22, 2024 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, which is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Penny’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to her loving brother John and the Picard family for being a big part of their mothers and her siblings lives. They would also like to extend their deepest appreciation to Hospice of the Western Reserve, Thank You all from the bottom of our hearts for all of your care, compassion, and keeping our mother comfortable during her transition to be with our Lord Jesus. Special Thank You to the Villa at the Lake and staff for their care for the nine years of making it her home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Penny’s memory to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church.
